Oppose

This legislation could ultimately exacerbate existing tension between law enforcement and the communities they serve, especially African Americans. Data shows police officers are safer now than ever before and the death penalty is already pursued in such cases.

Oppose

The ACLU opposes the Thin Blue Line Act because expanding the number of aggravating factors that would subject a person to the death penalty is unnecessary and duplicative, counterproductive to improving law enforcement and community relations, and unlikely to prevent future violence against police.

Oppose

The Thin Blue Line Act unnecessarily duplicates existing federal and state laws, since those who commit crimes against law enforcement are already subjected to the harshest penalties on the books.

Oppose

The Thin Blue Line Act purports to protect police officers but does nothing of the sort, nor does it do anything to improve police-community relationships. While we recognize the need to improve upon officer safety, the Thin Blue Line Act does nothing to actually ensure officer safety or prevent officer deaths in the line of duty. Instead, this legislation is an unnecessary and misguided attempt to politicize the unfortunate deaths of law enforcement officers and could ultimately exacerbate existing tension between law enforcement and the communities they serve, especially African Americans.
